The Drina originates near Šćepan polje, from the mountain rivers Piva and Tara, and flows into the Sava near Bosanska Rača. The length of the Drina River is 344 km. It is formed at an altitude of 432 m, and flows into the Sava at an altitude of 89 m. The difference in altitude from the formation of the Drina to the mouth is 385m. The water temperature varies during the year from 8.7 to 16.3 0C. The color of the Drina is mostly green. The water of the Drina belongs mainly to the IIa class of creditworthiness. The Drina is of great economic importance for the municipality of Bijeljina, but as a natural resource it is not sufficiently used.
The special richness of this river is its living world, and in that sense it is best known for its trophy juveniles, grayling and brown trout at the source, as well as for its extremely large scorpions, barbels, chubs and roaches.
The course of the Drina has been blocked several times by dams, and this has a special significance from the fishing aspect, because these dams, which represent impassable obstacles, cut off the migration routes of many species of fish. For these reasons, the parts of the flow between individual dams can be considered as biological units that function as independent units.
The Sava and Drina rivers have all the predispositions for the development of fishing tourism as well as for the development of sports and recreational water tourism. The accessibility of the coast, the characteristics of flora and fauna and the composition of the fish stock enable the development of these types of tourism.
Sport fishing, ie fishing with fishing tools, on the Sava and Drina rivers is carried out according to the provisions of the Law on Fisheries. The law and other regulations regulate what can be used to fish, when and at what time and which length categories. Fishing in a sporty way is only possible with a permit. The success of sport fishing depends on the knowledge and experience of anglers, its equipment with the necessary hunting tools. To fish, it is necessary to know the water, the terrain, the place where the fish stay or the parts of the river where the fish move, etc.
Measures to improve sport and recreational fishing are implemented in order to increase the fish stock, arrange access to the shores, accessibility of the terrain and protect the rivers Sava and Drina. The most attractive location for sport fishing is the part where the Drina flows into the Sava. For the development of this locality, as a potential for the development of a tourist destination, it is necessary to do tourist planned valorization.
In addition to the development of fishing tourism, the Drina River, with its characteristics, has the potential for the development of bathing tourism and various water sports. Cruises can be organized on the Sava River, which are complemented by complementary tourist attractions from the mainland.
